The Greenwich Tea Burning (December 22, 1774), New Jersey’s answer to the Boston Tea Party. A group of Cumberland County patriots, including Richard Howell and his twin brother Lewis, raided a merchant’s cellar and burned British tea in the Greenwwich town square. The Howell Homestead served as a staging area. It was Richard Howell’s first open act of defiance against the Crown.
